Matthew Johnson — Twelve years spent judging lighters by how they perform in the hand, not on the box.
Background & expertise
Matthew Johnson has built his career around a deceptively simple object: the everyday lighter. He began on the purchasing side, negotiating with manufacturers across Europe and Asia, and learned quickly that spec sheets rarely match real-world behaviour. Today he oversees product selection and supplier assessment, focusing on ignition reliability, gas quality and build durability. His judgement comes from more than a decade of handling thousands of units, from disposable models to refillable torch and arc designs.
How we select & test
Every lighter he approves passes through the same routine. He tests ignition consistency over several hundred strikes, measures flame stability in wind and cold, and checks refill valves for leakage after repeated cycles. He weighs each unit, inspects the housing for seams and flex, and compares gas consumption against the manufacturer’s claims. Models that fail on safety, that misfire when cold, or that feel fragile in the hand never reach the catalogue, regardless of margin.
